Writing-intensive (WI) classes are a fundamental part of the college experience, requiring students to develop and refine their writing skills. While these courses can be challenging (I currently have three classes that are WI), they offer an opportunity for personal growth and the honing of valuable communication abilities. In this article, I will explore effective strategies to help students navigate writing-intensive classes and create well-composed papers that showcase their knowledge and critical thinking.

Understand the Assignment:

Before diving into the writing process, take the time to thoroughly understand the assignment requirements. Pay attention to the prompt, guidelines, and any specific formatting or citation styles requested. If you have any doubts or questions, seek clarification from your instructor. Clear comprehension of the task at hand sets the foundation for a well-composed paper.

Plan and Organize:

Creating a clear and logical structure is crucial for a well-composed paper. Start by outlining the main points and arguments you want to address. Develop a coherent thesis statement that encompasses the central theme of your paper. Break down your ideas into paragraphs and consider the flow of information between them. A well-structured outline serves as a roadmap, guiding you through the writing process.

Conduct Thorough Research:

Research is the backbone of any well-composed paper. Take advantage of various resources, such as academic journals, books, credible websites, and scholarly databases. Gather information that supports your thesis and provides a well-rounded perspective on the topic. It is a super secret superpower that I am glad I invested in, while you are listening check for coherence, logical progression, and clarity of ideas. Ensure your paper flows smoothly and effectively communicates your arguments. Proofread meticulously to eliminate spelling, punctuation, and formatting mistakes.

In today's fast-paced and demanding world, anxiety has become a prevalent and often debilitating condition. It affects millions of people, robbing them of their peace and joy. While there are numerous strategies and treatments available to manage anxiety symptoms, it is essential to explore the roots of anxiety to achieve lasting relief. Picture this: You're standing in line at the grocery store, basket in hand, ready to pay for your weekly supply of snacks (because, priorities). Behind the counter, the cashier seems to be moving at a pace that would make a snail proud. You glance at your watch, which seems to be mocking you with its slow, deliberate ticking. Let's face it, waiting can be excruciatingly dull. Whether it's waiting for your turn at the doctor's office or waiting for that special someone to text you back, the agony of waiting can feel like an eternity. So why not find ways to make the waiting game a little more entertaining? Whip out your favorite mobile game, strike up a conversation with a stranger, or practice your dance moves in place. After all, life's too short to spend it twiddling your thumbs!

I want to be the best I can be, always. No pressure, right?

Embarking on my journey as a social work student has been an exhilarating yet overwhelming experience. As I navigate through the vast world of social work, I've come to realize the importance of continually sharpening my skills to become an effective and confident professional. In this blog post, I'd like to share my personal insights and reflections on enhancing my abilities as a social work student, with a particular focus on understanding and navigating the biopsychosocial elements, developing assessment skills through interviewing methods, and embracing the general intervention model.

One of the fundamental frameworks in social work is the biopsychosocial model, which recognizes that individuals' well-being is influenced by biological, psychological, and social factors. Grasping the significance of these elements has been crucial in my journey. I've dedicated time to study and comprehend the intricate interplay between biological factors, such as genetics and physical health, psychological factors, including emotions and mental health, and social factors, like family dynamics, cultural influences, and socioeconomic status. Understanding these elements has allowed me to view individuals holistically and appreciate the complexity of their lives.  I am still learning, this has a lot of intersectionality. 

It's not enough to simply understand the biopsychosocial elements; I've also learned the importance of effectively explaining and navigating them. As a social work student, I've been challenged to communicate these complex concepts to clients, colleagues. I've found that breaking down these elements into relatable terms while remaining sensitive to individual experiences is key. By honing my ability to explain and navigate the biopsychosocial elements, I've been able to advocate better for my clients and help them gain a deeper understanding of the factors influencing their well-being.

One of the most critical skills I've been working on (and will contiue to do so) as a social work student is interviewing. Interviews form the foundation of the assessment process, allowing me to gather information, build rapport, and establish a therapeutic relationship with my clients. To develop my assessment skills, I've focused on active listening, empathy, and effective questioning techniques. Creating a non-judgmental environment where clients feel safe to share their experiences has been a priority. Through regular practice of interviewing methods, I've become more proficient in gathering accurate information, identifying needs, and evaluating the strengths and challenges of my clients.

I have a need a lot of practice in this area.

In my social work education, I am learning to embrace the general intervention model as a systematic approach to addressing client needs. This model involves a series of steps, including engagement, assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and termination. Familiarizing myself with this model has allowed me to understand how each step contributes to the overall process of helping clients achieve positive outcomes. Embracing the general intervention model has increased my confidence in planning and implementing interventions that are tailored to each client's unique needs, ensuring a comprehensive and effective approach.

It's vital for me, as a social work student, to acknowledge that expertise in this field is an ongoing journey rather than a destination. There have been moments of uncertainty and a lack of confidence along the way. However, I've learned that practice is the key to improvement. I've embraced every opportunity to apply my skills in real-life scenarios, whether through field placements, volunteer work, or role-playing exercises. Seeking feedback from experienced professionals and reflecting on my experiences has allowed me to identify areas for growth and development. With time, dedication, and a genuine passion for helping others, I'm becoming more proficient and confident in my abilities as a social work practitioner.

In conclusion, the process of sharpening my skills as a social work student has been a transformative journey. It requires dedication, practice, and a genuine passion for making a positive impact on the lives of others. By understanding and navigating the biopsychosocial elements, developing assessment skills through interviewing methods, and embracing the general intervention model, I'm equipping myself with the necessary tools to excel in my future career as a social work professional. I want to end this with a cheesy catch phrase, but right now the only thing I can manifest is "to infinity and beyond," and so that just means I need to go for a walk and enjoy some sunshine. My future is bright, but only if I keep myself focused and determined.


Embracing Compassion, Promoting Peace, and Fighting for Justice: My Mission in the Social Work Field



In a world fraught with division and political threats, it is my unwavering commitment to dedicate my life to social work, working tirelessly to uplift the LGBTQIA+ community through compassion, promote peace, and fight for justice. Particularly in the face of political figures like Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis, who perpetuate hostility, my mission burns brighter than ever, serving as a beacon of hope for marginalized individuals yearning for acceptance and equality.

Compassion as My Guiding Light:

From an early age, I have been blessed with an innate sense of empathy and compassion. Witnessing the struggles faced by the LGBTQIA+ community, marginalized and subjected to discrimination, my heart ached, igniting rediscovered calling within me to make a difference. I have fought for LGBT rights before, and now I feel the need to to it again. It is this profound sense of compassion that propels me forward in the field of social work, driven to touch the lives of those in need, offering solace and support to the LGBTQIA+ community. 

The increased bias against LGBTQIA+ people has been my catalst to begin my journey with Spalding University and get my BSSW. There were more than 350 incidents of anti-L.G.B.T.Q. harassment, vandalism or assault in the United States from June 2022 through April 2023, according to a new report, reflecting a climate in which bias against gay and especially transgender people has become widespread. (New York Times, 2023)

Promoting Peace and Acceptance:

In a world marred by hostility and division, I firmly believe that peace and acceptance can be achieved through education, dialogue, and fostering understanding. Through my work, I tirelessly desitre to advocate for inclusive policies, challenging societal norms that perpetuate discrimination. By engaging in open conversations, I strive to encourage individuals to confront their biases and embrace the diversity that enriches our communities. I firmly believe that through peaceful means, we can dismantle barriers and create a society that celebrates every individual, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity. I am deeply inspired by the late Harvey Milk who I see as a pioneer for the rights of LGBT people. In 1973 Milk ran for a seat on San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors but was defeated. After another unsuccessful bid in 1976, he was elected in 1977, becoming one of the first openly gay elected officials in U.S. history.  (New York Times, 2023)  I believe that barriers like Ron Desantis and other bigot political figures are in comparison to Milk’s “Anita Bryant,” obstacles of his day.

The Threat of Political Figures:

In recent years, the LGBTQIA+ community has faced a resurgence of threats posed by political figures like Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis. His actions by signing the “Don’t Say Gay” bill in Florida concerns me. The Parental Rights in Education Act (HB 1557), commonly referred to as the "Don't Say Gay" law, is a Florida state law passed in 2022 that regulates public schools in Florida. (Wikipedia [Wiki], n.d.) Their policies and rhetoric seek to undermine the hard-fought progress made towards equality, leaving many feeling vulnerable and marginalized. Advocates say that because Florida’s K-3 curriculum does not currently include discussions of sexual orientation or gender identity, the law would not mandate an update to the state’s curriculum. But LGBTQ advocates warn that the law would make classrooms unsafe spaces for children who are LGBTQ or whose family members are LGBTQ. Such children often already face increased rates of stigma and isolation. (Time.com, 2023) 

I refuse to succumb to despair. Instead, I stand as a defiant force as I have many times in my life, unwavering in my commitment to uplift and protect the LGBTQIA+ community. I will not let fear and hatred dictate the course of society. Instead, I will tirelessly advocate for justice and equal rights. I feel this profession is more than a calling, it was something I was born to accomplish.

A Beacon of Hope:

In the face of adversities, I strive to personify the resilience and unwavering spirit of those who fight for justice and equality. I remain resolute, recognizing that the work I will do is more critical than ever. My compassion, coupled with my unwavering dedication, has become a beacon of hope for countless individuals who have been marginalized and silenced. Through my efforts, I send a powerful message: that love, compassion, and justice will prevail, even in the face of the most formidable challenges.

Toxic individuals exhibit patterns of negative behavior, including manipulation, criticism, gaslighting, and emotional or physical abuse. Recognizing Toxic People:

Identifying toxic people can be challenging, as their actions may be covert or disguised as concern. However, there are some common signs to watch out for:

Establish clear boundaries with toxic individuals. Communicate your needs and expectations, and be firm in enforcing these boundaries. Remember that self-care should always be a priority.

In this article, we will explore effective strategies for dealing with difficult people.

Stay calm and composed:

When faced with difficult people, it's crucial to remain calm and composed. Reacting impulsively or emotionally can escalate the situation further. Take a deep breath, compose yourself, and approach the interaction with a clear and rational mindset. Remember, you have control over your own emotions and reactions.

Ah, life's little surprises! It's incredible how things can change in the blink of an eye. One moment you're flexing your muscles as a bodybuilder, and the next, you're wondering how on earth you ended up resembling a fluffy marshmallow. And let's not forget about the handwriting transformation from a beautiful calligraphy exhibition to something that even chickens would scoff at. It's like your pen decided to embark on a rebellious journey of its own! That was from me being paralyzed from Multiple Sclerosis and having to rebuild and reset my life, which was not easy and very traumatic.

You learn who yor real freinds are, you learn who is there for you and who is not there for you, and you make necesarry changes. 

You take on a task, thinking it'll be a breeze, only to discover that it's as if the universe decided to crank up the difficulty level to a thousand. Suddenly, fear takes on a whole new meaning. You can stroll through a haunted house, and when a chainsaw-wielding maniac jumps out, your mind is like, "Seriously? Try dealing with a brain-eating disease, buddy!" The chainsaw guy becomes chump change, a mere blip on your radar. MRI scans that whisk you away into a realm of anxiety become scarier than any horror movie villain with a power tool.

Now, let's address the negative Nancy syndrome. We all have that one person in our lives who can turn a molehill into a mountain faster than you can say "drama queen." In your case, it's your lovely mother, who mastered the art of making a fuss out of the tiniest of things, or gaslighting to manipulate her way in to situations she wishes to control the narrartive for.

So I have bought about 400 of these stuffingless duck toys from Amazon over the past few years, and I replace them becuase my dog Zen, literally rips off their feet then the bill, and then chews off the eyes. You end up with a shredded yellow cloth as if a Muppet was murdered, and a limp soul less ball of cloth tries to glare at you from socketless eye holes where eyes used to smile at you from afar.

I throw them away after they get too chewed up as to not be a choking hazard for Zen, but alas, I still stumble across shredded duck parts in various areas of my house. It is as if my dog is a serial duck killer, and keeps tokens from her victims in random areas.

Zen is special to me, she was my working dog when I was paralyze from Multiple Sclerosis, and she also helped me through a lot of trying times with chemo, brain surgery, and a relapse.

She is not working anymore, she has the best live ever as a spoiled princess who still has puppy nightmares, and a endless supply of ducks to murder.

Failure. One of the greatest things to happen to me in late self discovery is a strengths test where it was determined that I was a high achiever. It explained so much about who I was, why I was so hard on myself, and ways to improve.  Having said that, when a high achiever makes a mistake, it's a scarlet letter, and a point of focus which blurs all other forms of logic.

3000 of 2999 - Perfect Happiness & The Colonoscopy


Today I had a colonoscopy. This is nothing new, I have had them before, and they always find polyps. My Grandfather died from colon cancer, so this is why I started getting screened in my mid to late 20's.

My next one is going to be in three years, so I will be 53 then, and totally used to the process that is colonoscopy. FYI Jake, you need to prep for two days. Srsly.

I bought a book called "3000 Things About Me," and I want to attempt to answer one question per day as part of my self care exercise. This starts TODAY 2.21.2024...

WHAT IS MY IDEA OF PERFECT HAPPINESS?

Perfect happiness would be a relatively new concept for me, as I can recall brief moments in time that I felt like there was no care in the world and nothing at all to worry about. Here as of late I am afraid to fail, I am afraid to stop pushing myself hard academically, and I for some reason feel as if I do not do enough.

I try to read the required text, but sometimes fall short and have to have it read to me by my text to speech engine.  I enjoy listening and counting the times that program mispronounces words.

Perfect happiness would be freedom from barriers, worry, and confllct. I have not known that in my life. I think that perfect happiness is a subjective and elusive concept that can vary from person to person. It generally refers to a state of being completely content, fulfilled, and free from any negative emotions or concerns. While it may be difficult to achieve a state of perfect happiness permanently, many individuals can experience fleeting moments of happiness and contentment in their lives.

In your description, you mentioned brief moments when you felt like there were no cares in the world and nothing to worry about. These moments can be seen as glimpses of happiness, where you were able to temporarily let go of your concerns and enjoy a sense of freedom. However, it's important to recognize that life is inherently filled with challenges, responsibilities, and occasional setbacks. Striving for a life completely devoid of barriers, worry, and conflict may not be realistic or attainable in the long term.

It's natural to have fears and concerns, such as the fear of failure or the pressure to constantly push yourself academically. These feelings can stem from various sources, including societal expectations, personal aspirations, or a desire for self-improvement. While ambition and a drive for success can be positive motivators, it's essential to find a balance and avoid putting excessive pressure on yourself. It's also worth noting that perfection is an unattainable standard, and constantly feeling like you're not doing enough can be mentally and emotionally draining. In the beginning...........



Quite honestly my first post on this blog, and my millionth post since I have been on the Internet. I am turning 50 years old March 4h, 1974.  Literally a half a century old, and freaking out at the fact that I should be having a mid-life crisis, but I am a student and I do not have time for such petty wastes of time. ;)

This introduction is many things, but mostly about what I plan to do with this blog/journal and how I can benefit from taking time to chronicle my thoughts.

Tomorrow, I will begin the process of starting my first prompt, or, answering a series of 3000 questions. Mainly because I think those questions help me examine my life - but more on that later. 

This will be a reflective journal, part of my self-care journey, and that is something I am grateful to share with you.
